Steven Hyde is the well-known mischievous slacker of 1970's Wisconsin. Always the Zen one in his group of friends, the smart teen turns out to have a caring side. Although he does not like to show it, the hippie always knows what will happen, and he watches over his friends through bad times. Even though he is always pegged as a bad kid , the teen always turns out to be the smart one... but not in a good way. Steven is destined to be the smartest man.... .....In his cell block! He's the laid-back dude, the wise guy, the stupid-but-smart teen. He's the one providing the gang with drugs, (only marjuana) through his connection, a hippie friend called Leo. He and the gang have smoked it throughout their teenage years, secretly in Eric's basement. They do get caught of doing it at one point, by Eric's dad, but somehow manage to continue anyway. He, like all of the gang and any typical teenager, loves drinking beer and any liquid with alcohol in it.Steven's dad left when Steven was around nine years old and his mom hates her son for the pregnancy ruining her water skiing career. His mom is also an alcoholic, and implied by Steven she was both physically and emotionally abusive to him. When Steven was sixteen, his mother abandons him, at which point Kitty and Red Forman, Eric's parents, take him in and raise and love him as their own son.Steven never cries or genuinely complains about his family situation. On the contrary, he tried to hide it as long as possible and turned down help until he had no other choice but to accept it. Like, accepting sandwich from Eric when all he had for food was some crackers and ketchup. His hurt because of his parents does show through in several ways and situations. Like, when he calls to his mom who's been gone for a while, finding out she's not coming back, he tells her on the phone seemingly calmly whatever makes you happy but after hanging up he abuses the phone and finally throws it at a wall. When years later his dad suddenly returns, Steven storms in and yells at him but it doesn't help because the dad keeps agreeing and thus doesn't give him the chance to let it all out. Steven also very much enjoys seeing other people get hurt (physically or emotionally) and often is also the cause of that hurt. This, to ease his own inner hurting--although he often also tries to help and fix it if he's done some serious damage. When Steven's seventeen, his dad suddenly comes back, and eventually, with a little help from Eric's hard-ass dad, he even makes an effort to be a good parent to Steven - who, despite of his bitterness and hurt, had decided to move in with him from the Formans. They still kept their door open for him, telling him that if he ever needed a place to stay, he'd always be welcome back. Very soon Steven does need a home and family again. He lives in the Formans' basement in secret for couple of weeks until they find out about it. To the parents he tells his dad got a job in another state but later tells Eric his mom and dad got back together, but he doesn't know where they are because they won't tell him. Some time after the kids' graduation, when Hyde accidentally falls down from the town's water-tower, Eric's mom, who is a nurse and nurses him, finds out from Steven's birth record, that the man who Steven believes to be his father, isn't really his father. Soon enough Steven decides to contact his real father, who turns out to have a lot in common with him, both in looks and mind. It is unclear if the father knew he had a son until this point. The man is also African-American, has a daughter, rich, and owns a chain of record stores. Their first meeting doesn't go well, but soon they start to get along wonderfully. Regardless, Steven remains living with the Formans. Show less «
