Zek is the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance. He has a son, Krax, who is expected to succeed him. He uses Quark as his representative aboard the USS Defiant mission to make contact with the Founders of the Dominion. He is a typical greed-driven Ferengi until given good reason to change. He is very wealthy from his many successful business dealings following the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.He pursues a romance with Ishka, Quark's mother, although she is far from the typical Ferengi woman. Zek typically sees the Federation as allies, despite the official Ferengi position of neutrality during the Dominion War. He has a Hupyrian servant, Maihar'du, who has taken a vow of silence to everyone but Zek.
